Scared by Your Own Imagination
Numbers 13:31-33 - But the others said, "We can't attack those people; they're way stronger than we are." They spread scary rumors among the People of Israel. They said, "We scouted out the land from one end to the other—it's a land that swallows people whole. Everybody we saw was huge. Why, we even saw the Nephilim giants (the Anak giants come from the Nephilim). Alongside them we felt like grasshoppers. And they looked down on us as if we were grasshoppers."
The spies' report were probably sincere. Because they truly thought it ridiculous to even think about conquering the land. The land seems to them so perfectly unconquerable!
And sometimes it happens to us. We are scared to immobility by our own imagination. We unconsciously exaggerate the obstacles in our way and it gives us excuses to escape or avoid from the dreading vision of confronting them. Our rivals become giants, and we shrink down to the size of grasshoppers.
But the Lord is our strength. I wounded why the Lord sent the spies out in the first place. He Himself surely doesn't need any updated information. He was sending them out to let them see the hope He had brought them and then, as expected, be frightened by such wonderful a hope. In our words, it is just too good to be true.
But as long as the vision you have is truly from the Lord, not from your sinful desire, the frightening goodness is something we should cherish. Because it is in this drastic comparison the Lord 's power and glory show forth. He will do it. Cannan will be conquered. For the Lord loves you so.
